Manolis Calliyiannis, was born September 1923, in Lesvos island, Greece, where he lived until 1940. During the war, he was a navigator in the Royal Air Force. He studied arhitecture from 1946-8, at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg and it was during this period he decided to devote himself to painting. He had his first one- man show, in Johannesburg in 1948 at the Constantia Galleries and with the small profits from his exhibition was able to pay his fare to Paris, where lived there for 30 years.
From 1979 to 1999 Manolis directed the Museum Teriant in Mytilene, placed there by the creator of the Museum Stratis Eleftheriadis - Teriade. After leaving the museum, he moved to Crete in Vamos, birthplace of his father, where he left his last breath.
I had the honor to work with him for 25 years and live a unique experience with a particular artist.
